Dr. Andrew Harkin
Dr Andy Harkin is a fully trained medical doctor who is a practising GP and a highly experienced Consultant Psychotherapist. Andy originally began his therapeutic training in Ireland whilst working as a doctor and as his interest in trauma and body evolved he subsequently moved to the States and embarked upon an intensive training in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SP). He is an internationally respected trainer in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy and speaker on Trauma and the Body delivering training in the UK and Ireland as well as throughout Europe in Poland, Holland, Norway and Italy and more recently in Canada and Australia. Over the last twenty years, Andy’s clinical and research interests have focused on the neurobiology of trauma and the body. This has led to a special interest in the nascent field of prenatal and perinatal trauma with a particular focus on the unfolding impacts of trauma on the developing nervous system including epigenetic considerations.
Andy has also completed a four-year postgraduate teacher training in Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy at Bangor University (North Wales). He has recently given a TED talk on ‘Mind the Gap – Moving from Brain to Body’, which offers some interesting insights into how we can work with the primary intelligence of the body to restore and reclaim our health and well-being. He is especially passionate about how we can access the innate intelligence of the body as an untapped resource to healing in therapy. In his own clinical work, he utilizes the wisdom of the body as both a therapeutic resource and as a somatic bridge to sequencing traumatic activation through the body.
Andy is one of our key clinical advisors on the neurobiology of trauma and its impact on the developing brain and nervous system as well as helping us understand how we can utilize body-based interventions as a key therapeutic resource when working with early developmental trauma.
Andy is a Medical Doctor and is fully registered with the General Medical Council (Ireland). He is also a fully Certified Advanced Sensorimotor Psychotherapist, Supervisor and Trainer.
